How can you write about a topic you know nothing about?

In the copywriting world you have those who work in a particular niche — it may be education, healthcare, fashion — and then you have those, like me, who don’t.

This isn’t to say those who write to a niche are in the wrong, in fact, if you have a niche then hats off to you. You found a subject that you completely fell in love with, that’s a good thing.

But I get twitchy. I’m always wanting to learn about anything and everything, I like keeping things fresh and new. And it’s rare that you can find a profession where everyday is different, where one day you may be writing for a pet brand and another you may be doing the social media for a healthcare company — but that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing.

Because while some people fall in love with one subject, I fall in love with all of them. But how exactly do I make it seem like I’m an expert in a field when I’m not? Well…

  • I might start by researching: It might be scouring LinkedIn groups or Twitter hashtags, exploring recent discussions and threads.

  • Speaking to people: I may connect with industry specialists and reach out to them to under the ins and outs of their field.

  • Consuming everything: I may read books or articles, watch documentaries or TV shows, anything I can get my hands on to understand what your industry reader.

These are just a few of the steps I’m willing to take to become the expert, because I want to learn, I want to get involved, I’m interested and I care.
