The art of social media

I’ve touched on this before, but social media can be a tricky avenue to explore - especially, when you aren’t too sure what exactly it is that you need to do.

And as a social media specialist, I get it. Even I feel like I’m shouting into a deep, dark void at times - but other times, social media is a magical place full of creativity, positivity, and support. So here are my top tips for acing any social media platform.

  1. Each have their own algorithm - but all put importance on consistency

The more you use a platform, the more they’ll favour you in the algorithm. But with so many platforms around, it can be hard to know what to pour your energy into - my advice? Focus on three platforms maximum to see the highest rate of return. To start with you may want to be posting, engaging with others, or using certain features at least once a day, so not to spread yourself too thinly, that may be using Instagram stories multiple times a day as well as then posting to LinkedIn once a day.

2. Content that has value

This is where a business plan will pay off, as this is all about your target audience. Understanding who you are trying to target will dictate the type of content they’ll be attracted to, and therefore, the type of content you should post. Whether that content is to advertise, inform, or educate the content must appeal to that target audience and give something back to them. Not only will this help on the algorithm front, but it will also help you create a relationship with your audience that it based on valuable content that will encourage clients to return.

3. Multimedia options

Nearly all the platforms offer multimedia options as a way to mix it up. Instagram offers IGTV, Facebook has Facebook Live, Twitter has Twitter Live, and so on. Most algorithms have always favoured those who use all the capabilities on a platform, versus those who only use one specific feature; this will especially be the case if the content you use is native to that algorithm. For example, LinkedIn prefers if your video content is featured only through LinkedIn and not through a third-party site such as YouTube.

Like I mentioned, each platform has their own individual set of criteria to meet, so to really become successful at that platform you’ll need to explore the ins and outs of what they require from you - or hire me, and I’ll do it for you.
