The tricks to social media

Social media can be a tricky medium. Each platform has its own individual algorithm, and as such, navigating through each platform can be a challenge if you aren’t sure the ins and outs of it.

However, there are one or two fast rules to remember that apply to all platforms.

1) Consistency

I’ve mentioned this before, but all social media platforms want you to spend time on their app - why wouldn’t they? The more time you put into the app, the more you get out from it. The whole point of social media is to connect and many of the algorithms will favour you if you invest your spare time on their app engaging with others. Having a close knit circle of people you engage with frequently will help your ranking in the algorithm - and theoretically, mean that you rank higher. However, there are caveats to consider. For example, the quality of the content you’re uploading, whether you’re on the app during the optimum time of day, or if your engagements are unique and personalised - often the algorithm will note if you’re just copying and pasting the same message to everyone, and will be more likely to flag you as a bot.

2) Patience

Social media isn’t an overnight fix, it takes time and a lot of consistency before you see the benefits roll in. Sure, if you’re lucky, you may have a post blow up (and that’s great!), however, more often than not, that’s a one-off that can be tricky to replicate. It is much better to slowly build up your network, appease the algorithm, and find a regular posting system that works for you.

I want to reiterate that you will need to explore each platform’s algorithms before you create your social media strategy, but if that’s not something you have time for then hire me instead - clearly, I know what I’m talking about.
