Why are freelancers ‘so expensive’?

I’m not one to justify freelancers prices, you know, being a freelancer and all.

But I always feel as though I have to justify the prices that I charge, which is crazy because the things that I create for my clients are always well-received and get the job done.

But for argument sake, let’s answer the question… why are freelancers ‘so expensive’?

(I’d like to preface this by saying the average copywriter is paid £300 per day…)

Research time

When you’re writing about a topic that you’re not familiar in, it’s important to to understand that it takes us a while to encapsulate these things:

  • The lingo: To sound like the expert of the topic we’re discussing, we need time to research lingo, target audiences, key phrases, all of that good stuff. This is the stuff that’s going to capture the tone of voice that your brand needs, but that takes time.

  • The content: To be able to understand the type of content people want to read, we need time to explore what your competition has done - and see how we can do it better.

  • The audience: Freelancers need time to get in the minds of the audience, and truly understand what it is that they exactly need and want from us. We can only do that with research.

The bulk of it

When we’re writing or creating social media content (you know, everything I do), it’s important that we take the time to plan exactly what we want to say or create before we actually execute it. If you’re a copywriter (like me!), you may also use this time to research any other sources that may help you with what you’re creating.

It’s only after all of this that we’re then able to start on the actual project itself. Now, depending on the length, nuances, deadline, or goal, the time this takes may differ. However, typically, this will take the most time - and for good reason, this is the bulk of the work.

But that’s not all…

Edit, edit, and edit again!

If you think the final product we give to you hasn’t been edited again and again, then I have news for you.

Typically, when I edit a copywriting piece, I’ll look at it once for spelling and grammar, another time for flow, and one more time for luck! It’s time consuming, right?

And then there may be edits that you want to make yourself? That’s no problem, but that adds on more time.

You see where I’m going with this, right?

Yeah, it’s hefty work. Maybe you won’t mind paying our fees as much now, I hope so anyway.

If you’re interested in what I can offer then pop me an email, and let’s chat!
