Why copywriting?

If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m a freelance copywriter (and social media specialist, but we’ll get into that later).

Often I get a lot of people asking me to explain what my job means, a few even ask how exactly I got into it. So here I am, answering…

The early days

Some people always knew what they wanted to be as a child, some people still need to work it out well into their twenties, I fell somewhere in the middle. Even as a child I was always a planner, I’ve had a 10 year plan for years, I probably had a 10 year plan before I was 10. However, my plan changed frequently.

When I was 8-years-old, I wanted to be a nurse, by 10, I wanted to be a teacher, then very briefly I wanted to be a chef.

And as I got older, and I started to learn more about what I was actually good - and passionate - at, it was then that I started to indulge my own dreams: writing.

The journalism days

I’d been writing ever since a child, with big dreams of writing poetry and a novel; you’ll be excited to know, I’ve just finished my first ever novel.

In my early twenties, I landed a job at the Times Educational Supplement; it was exciting as it sounds. But truly, while I was there I learnt so much about my craft: writing, editing, SEO. I was surrounded by some brilliant, articulate, and creative minds who really showed me the ropes.

I spent two wonderful years there. However, as time went on I started to get twitchy. Going into the same office every day wasn’t everything it was cracked up to be, and although I was lucky to be in the position I was in, I wasn’t feeling that same fulfilling feeling anymore.

So, I sat down and had a brainstorm about what I wanted my life to look like.

Copywriting

I wanted the freedom and independence of a freelance life, and I’d always been in love with the creative process. In journalism, my morals often felt in the way, but copywriting offered me the opportunity to be creative while still keeping people informed, while keeping them happy.

That snappy sentence that makes people stop and think, that piece of long form writing that makes people feel connected, that web page that jumps out of the screen. That piece of copy that garners business, that makes startups go to established businesses. That piece of copy that works and helps.

That was what I wanted to write, and so I did.
